So, I was wandering around the
internet when I came across a little anime that I had never encountered
before by the name of Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-Chan. Never one to pass up
some anime humor, I became interested in the anime’s bright art style
and crazy concept. After watching the whole series, I realized how much
I was missing. There really isn’t anything like Dokuro-Chan. So, I’m
here to review this anime. Despite not having reviewed an anime since
Zatch Bell, and Dokuro-Chan isn’t even licensed in America yet, I must
say that this anime demands a review. So, here we go.
Story 5/5
The anime itself focuses around Sakura, a young boy
who has just entered his first year of high school. After entering high
school, Sakura comes across a weird girl named Dokuro, who surprisingly,
is an angel. After letting the young Dokuro stay in his house, Sakura
learns that in the future, he will create technology that will give
people immortality. Oddly enough the technology freezes the aging of
women at the age of 12. The world, in the future, become a pedophile’s
dreamland. Apparently, God has been angered and has sent Dokuro back in
time to kill Sakura and to stop the technology from being created. The
catch is that when Dokuro arrives in the past, she gains feelings toward
Sakura and refuses to kill him. Even weirder is that whenever Dokuro
gets upset, she draws her mighty spiked bat, Excaliborg, and smashes
Sakura into a bloody mess (Bokusatsu Tenshi means "club-to-death
angel" in Japanese"). Fortunately, with her trademark "Pipiru-piru-piru-pipiru-pi"
chant, Dokuro-Chan can make Sakura instantly come back to life. If you’ve
had the high amount of sanity to read this far, congratulations, because
Dokuro-Chan has one of the most over-the-top, ridiculous, and purely
entertaining concepts in a long time. Weird as it is, throughout the
series, some interesting twists arise, and the comedic romance continues
down the path of confusion. But who cares? It’s original and it’s
perfect.
Art: 4/5
The anime style of Dokuro-Chan is nothing
particularly special, but is so bright, colorful, and vibrant that it’s
hard not to care. Characters, especially Dokuro-Chan, are brilliant.
Dokuro looks young enough, but beautiful enough to get anyone’s
interest. Sakura isn’t very original, but the plethora of expressions
the guy makes is funny. The other characters are very interesting. The
over-the-top deaths are hilarious. Just hilarious. Not much going on in
Dokuro-Chan, but it keeps the concept strong with some appropriate
scenes and hilarious animations.
Audio 4/5
The theme song will get in your head and stay there
for a LOOONG time. Trust me, I’ve been punished for exposing some
people to the maddeningly-catchy opening theme (*cough* my girlfriend
*cough*). Saeko Chiba does an excellent job on both the opening and
closing themes, although the closing theme doesn’t follow as strong a
momentum as the opening. Voice acting is very well done. I can’t make
as strong a judgment in audio, but from what I heard, it does a good
job.
Length 3.5/5
This is the only part of this anime that I can see
as a problem. Although I won’t spoil the ending, it just feels like it
came too fast. The anime itself is eight episodes long, with each
episode being about 15 minutes long, so right there it feels short. The
climactic finisher feels forced. I can’t help but compare this to FLCL,
a short anime which somehow got a powerful story completed in six
episodes. Dokuro-Chan, however, has some hilarious moments, but right
when the madness gets you laughing, you must face the true story, and by
the time that’s over, the whole anime is over. The whole concept of
Dokuro-Chan is so original and entertaining, it could’ve gone for many
more episodes, but sadly, it doesn’t. Don’t get me wrong; the ending
is a happy one, and the whole use of romantic comedy is great, but the
entire anime could’ve been longer. Hilarious, but I just wish the
hilarity lasted a bit longer.
Tilt 5/5
Take the satirical comedy of Excel Saga, the
dysfunctional romance of Love Hina, the magical girl work of Nurse Witch
Komugi, throw in some mass violence and you have an excellent anime.
Dokuro-Chan, somehow, someway, merges the many genres into a satisfying
package, while keeping the overall structure in tact. Dokuro is one of
the most adorable and funniest characters released in years, and Sakura
is so much of a dork you have to laugh. This is some romantic comedy
with so many twists it’s enjoyable.
Final Verdict 5/5
So many genres have been seamlessly merged together
to create Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-Chan, and none of those genres are
hindered by each other. The relationship between Sakura and Dokuro is
funny enough, but this anime threw in some crazy dialogue for good
measure and some hilarious violence for better measure. There is
absolutely nothing like Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-Chan in anime today and
every piece of this anime is laugh-out-loud enjoyable. I’m keeping a
close watch on this anime, and I’m begging for someone like ADV to
license this gem. But why wait? Check this anime out now! Now!
